Fence Post Brush Handles

I was replacing some fence posts on the back of our property, and I noticed, "Hey, this might make a nice brush handle." I am not sure what kind of wood it is, but it is very hard. I am thinking it has been a fence post for at least 30 years though. Anyhow, I cut off three pieces and set them aside. Today, I thought I would see what was inside of one of them.

I dry fit some knots for this photo.

Update: Branded and two coats of polycrylic.

Here they are with knots dry fitted. Left to right: horse, B&W synthetic, two-band badger, Ace synthetic, and B&W synthetic.
